What is microsuction ear wax removal?

Across the medical industry, microsuction ear wax is widely agreed to be one of the safest ways to remove ear wax build up.
Microsuction removal offers several advantages over syringing or irrigation:
  • Microsuction can still be used where an ear drum perforation exists
  • It is safe to use at the time of an external or middle ear infection
  • Risks are comparatively lower than with ear irrigation or syringing
  • It’s carried out under high magnification for more detailed viewing and precise treatment.

Microsuction ear wax removal in Canary Wharf is considered the most cost effective and safest method of removing ear wax build up and debris.

What is the process for microsuction ear wax removal?

The process of ear microsuction is inserting a high magnification microscope and a small, very thin, steel fitting attached to a suction pipe into the ear. This will be used to effectively target and remove any ear wax build up.

Once you have made the trip from Greenwich or Canary Wharf to our clinic, we will make you as comfortable as possible before the small procedure.  Our specialist clinician will examine the ear using a binaural microscope called a head loupe (magnifying glasses). With a clear view of the ear canal, the wax is carefully removed using low suction, which is considered the safest process.

This is the most cost effective and safest way to remove ear wax build up from the ear canal due to its effectiveness, painless application and safety. The whole process takes just a few minutes, and most people report no discomfort during the procedure, meaning if you work or live in Canary Wharf or Greenwich you can head straight home or back to work!

Great walk in service. Friendly and efficient staff. Many thanks
Travelled here from Orpington because it was the only place in South London that was able to find me a same day appointment on a Friday. Parked right outside in road for free. Friendly reception, taken through to audiology room, seated in fully adjustable chair for examination and ear wax removal from both ears. Prior to visit, I had used Earol ear spray for 7 days. The vacuum procedure tself was completely painless, not even uncomfortable, and all done in 5 minutes, with both ears completely cleared of substantial amounts of wax. Overall result is that my hearing has been restored, and I am very very pleased with result. Highly recommend.

I had been almost totally deaf in my left ear for some time with pressure in my head and ringing noises. Otex Express ear drops over two weeks had no effect. My local GP said that I had hard impacted wax in my ear. I took her advice and used pharmaceutical grade olive oil drops for two weeks to soften the wax then to come back for a NHS referral for free private treatment. However, when I did this the receptionist said that I would have to wait until January 2024 just to get the referral. I could not bear being deaf over Christmas and the New Year so I contacted the Welling Ear Clinic. Des fitted me in the same day. He cleaned out my left ear and also found a large piece of wax in my other ear. Total cost only £60.00 for the two ears. What good value. Well worth paying so I can now hear again. Well done Des!

Ear Wax Microsuction FAQ

What is microsuction?

Ear microsuction entails the use of a gentle vacuum machine to leave the ear free of wax. A microscope allows us to see clearly into the ear to carry out the procedure. The end results for the patient are better hearing and cleaner ears.

How is microsuction performed at your clinic near Greenwich?

At our specialist ear wax clinic just a short drive from Canary Wharf, a suction device is used to remove the earwax under a microscope. A small, thin wand is placed inside the ear canal to carefully suction the wax away.

Does microsuction hurt?

Microsuction should not cause any pain or discomfort and is often regarded as one of the safest ways to remove any ear wax blockage. However, due to the sensitive nature of the ear canal, extra care is taken to avoid touching the surface so as to prevent discomfort. No anaesthetic or analgesia is generally used to perform the procedure. The suction can sound relatively noisy. If you have an ear infection or inflammation in the ear canal, the procedure may be slightly uncomfortable.

How long does the procedure take at your clinic near Canary Wharf?

If you come and visit our clinic just a short drive from Canary Wharf, we’ll conduct a very quick procedure. This usually only takes around 15 to 30 minutes to complete, meaning you can get back to work or your busy life as soon as possible!

Do I need to prepare for the microsuction procedure at your Canary Wharf clinic?

No preparation is required for micro-suction to be performed.

The only preparation you need to make is to check your route to get to our clinic as we are located just a 25 minute drive from Canary Whatf in Welling.

However, it is recommended to use olive oil based ear drops for a couple of days before the procedure to soften the wax. If you have an ear infection (external or internal) it is recommended to have this treated by a GP before micro-suction as these conditions can make the procedure uncomfortable. Alternatively, the ear canal can be suctioned to help clear up the infection.

How do I know if I need microsuction?

An otoscopic examination is performed before microsuction, which provides video of the inner ear and will detect a wax build-up. If no wax is found, the procedure will not be performed. However, if wax is present, the procedure will go ahead.

Is ear wax microsuction safe?

The procedure is considered to be entirely safe although, as per any medical procedure, there are some risks associated with micro-suction. Some dizziness may occur for a short time after micro-suction. Tinnitus may result from the procedure but should dissipate naturally. Damage to the ear canal is very rare.
